Third-party BNPL disputes are adjudicated by the provider under its merchant agreement — not by card issuers under network rules. Klarna gives ~14 days to respond in its merchant portal; Afterpay and Sezzle run similar windows. Evidence standards echo card disputes (delivery proof, order records) but submission, deadlines, and outcomes live entirely inside each provider's system. The operational risk is fragmentation: disputes arriving in portals nobody checks.
How BNPL disputes differ from chargebacks
With card disputes, the issuer decides under Visa/Mastercard rules and your processor forwards evidence. With BNPL, the provider IS the adjudicator: the customer complains to Klarna, Klarna emails you a records request, and Klarna rules under its own merchant terms.
Consequences: no reason codes, no network evidence fields, no arbitration path — and no impact on your card chargeback rate (a real silver lining). But losses hit the same: the provider claws back the settlement.
Provider by provider
- Klarna: disputes surface in the merchant portal; ~14-day response window; delivery proof and order documentation resolve most non-receipt claims. Unanswered = automatic loss.
- Afterpay: similar portal flow; shorter effective windows on some dispute types; strong emphasis on tracking data.
- Sezzle / Zip: smaller volume, email-driven processes; same evidence logic.
All of them run their own fraud checks at approval — so 'unauthorized' claims are rare; the volume is non-receipt and quality, where your standard delivery evidence works.
The fragmentation problem
A store running Shopify Payments + PayPal + Klarna has three dispute inboxes with three deadline clocks. The failure mode isn't losing arguments — it's not showing up: portal disputes expiring unseen while the team watches the Shopify admin.
Minimum fix: portal notification emails routed to a shared channel with an SLA. Better: unified dispute handling — Aurai consolidates Shopify Payments and PayPal disputes today, with the same evidence engine across both, so at least the card-rail majority runs itself.
Frequently asked questions
Do Klarna disputes affect my chargeback rate?
No — they're internal to Klarna and never touch card-network counts. A real advantage of BNPL volume for rate-pressured merchants.
Can a customer dispute with Klarna AND their card issuer?
They can try — the card issuer dispute would target their Klarna payment, landing on Klarna, not you. Your exposure is the Klarna-side process.
