The line that matters is Visa's 0.9% (disputes ÷ transactions). Cross it and Shopify's processor enters network monitoring programs on your behalf — then passes the pressure to you as reserves, warnings, and ultimately account termination with a 5-year MATCH-list entry. Healthy ecommerce runs 0.2–0.6% depending on vertical. Winning disputes does NOT lower the rate; only preventing filings does.
How the rate is calculated
Network formula: this month's dispute count ÷ last month's transaction count, computed per card network. Won disputes still count — the rate measures filings, not outcomes.
Benchmarks by vertical are in chargeback rates by industry: grocery ~0.2%, apparel 0.6–1.0%, electronics 0.8–1.2%. If you're 1.5x your vertical baseline, investigate. At 0.7%+ absolute, act — the 0.9% Visa threshold has a 100-dispute/month minimum but Shopify's risk team reacts earlier.
The escalation ladder
- ~0.5–0.7%: nothing visible, but you're on internal watchlists. Reserve risk rises.
- ~0.9%+ with volume: network monitoring (VDMP/ECM) — per-dispute fines flow through, remediation plan demanded.
- Sustained excess: Shopify Payments termination. Your store keeps running but you need a new processor — and high-risk processors quote 2–3x normal rates for terminated merchants.
- MATCH list: 5 years of underwriting difficulty everywhere.
Each rung is avoidable at the rung before it.
Managing the rate
Only prevention moves the rate:
- Pre-dispute alerts convert would-be chargebacks into refunds — the single fastest lever (economics here)
- Descriptor + delivery notifications kill "unrecognized" and "where is my order" filings
- Order screening stops true fraud before fulfillment
Representment then recovers the money on what still gets filed. Aurai does both sides — prevention included free, representment at 25% of wins.
Frequently asked questions
Does winning disputes lower my Shopify chargeback rate?
No. The rate counts disputes filed, regardless of outcome. Winning recovers money; only prevention protects the rate.
At what rate does Shopify terminate accounts?
There's no published number. Sustained rates near or above Visa's 0.9% with meaningful volume put you in termination territory; healthy stores run 0.2–0.6%.
