Checkout settings that change your dispute rate

Checkout settings get chosen for conversion and forgotten. Several of them are quietly writing your future dispute evidence — or failing to.

Five settings with dispute consequences: account-optional checkout (login history = evidence), phone number collection (verification channel), address validation (kills failed-delivery disputes), delivery-date expectations (kills early not-received filings), and payment-method transparency. None require sacrificing conversion; all change what evidence exists when a dispute arrives 60 days later.

The five settings

  1. Customer accounts (optional, not required): required accounts hurt conversion, but *optional* accounts with post-purchase account-creation prompts build login history — identity-continuity evidence guest checkout never generates.
  2. Phone field (shipping updates framing): collected phone = your verify-first channel and delivery-coordination trail.
  3. Address validation on: malformed addresses → failed deliveries → not-received disputes you can't win. Validation removes the category.
  4. Delivery expectations at checkout: an arrival estimate beside the shipping choice is the disclosure that defeats filed-early disputes.
  5. Recognizable payment naming: wallet checkouts (Shop Pay, PayPal) appear differently on statements — a receipt email naming the payment method preempts the 'what is this charge' scan.

The evidence angle

The pattern: checkout is where evidence gets created or doesn't. Login histories, validated addresses, disclosed delivery windows, phone contact trails — all exist only if the configuration captured them at purchase time.

Audit takes ten minutes in Settings → Checkout. Aurai then harvests whatever your checkout captures — the richer the configuration, the stronger every future rebuttal.

Frequently asked questions

Do required customer accounts reduce fraud?

Marginally — but they cost real conversion. Optional accounts with post-purchase creation prompts capture most of the evidence value without the checkout friction.

Does address validation affect disputes?

Directly — undeliverable-address failures become not-received disputes. Validation removes a small but entirely preventable dispute category.
