Pre-orders on Shopify — the chargeback trap in delayed fulfillment

Every week between charge and shipment is dispute exposure. Pre-orders stretch that window to months — and cardholder patience doesn't stretch with it.

Pre-order disputes are almost entirely 'not received' filed before the promised ship date. The defenses are contractual clarity (unmissable ship-date disclosure at checkout), cadenced updates (silence reads as scam), and a documented option to cancel anytime pre-shipment. With those three, a pre-ship dispute is defensible: the customer agreed to the date, was updated, and had an exit. Without them, it's a loss.

The exposure window

Cardholders can dispute up to 120 days from the charge (and networks extend for future-delivery purchases). An 8-week pre-order spends its entire life inside that window — and 'where is my item' anxiety typically starts at day 14, not day 56.

Each fulfillment delay compounds: a slipped ship date converts patient customers into disputers within days of the missed date. Also note: long charge-to-ship lag is itself a risk flag for Shopify Payments holds.

Three rules for clean pre-orders

  1. Ship date on the buy button, not the FAQ. "Pre-order — ships Oct 15" as the CTA text. That screenshot becomes your evidence.
  2. Update every 2 weeks, and immediately on any slip. Include the new date and a one-click cancel/refund option. An offered-and-declined refund is decisive dispute evidence.
  3. Consider auth-at-order, capture-at-ship for high AOV — you can't be disputed for a charge that hasn't captured. (Note Shopify's standard auth window is short; extended-auth support varies by setup.)

When they dispute anyway

Pre-ship dispute + your three rules in place: submit the checkout screenshot showing the disclosed date, the update-email trail, and the ignored cancel option. That packet wins the reasonable cases.

Post-promised-date dispute with no shipment: refund, don't fight — you'll lose and burn the fee.

Aurai captures checkout-state evidence automatically and applies the fight/fold logic per dispute, which matters at crowdfund-style pre-order volume.

Frequently asked questions

Can customers dispute a pre-order before the ship date?

Yes, and they do — 'not received' disputes commonly arrive weeks before the promised date. Disclosed dates plus update trails make them defensible.

Is charging at order legal for pre-orders?

Yes with disclosure, but card networks expect delivery-date clarity and timely fulfillment. FTC mail-order rules also apply for US merchants — ship by the stated date or offer a refund.
