Shopify Protect covers ~30–40% of a typical Shopify merchant's dispute volume— the eligible Shop Pay fraud cases. The other 60–70% (digital, international, non-fraud) needs representment. If you treat Protect as your only defense, you're leaving the majority of your winnable disputes on the table. If you fight everything Protect already covers, you're doing duplicate work for no gain. The right strategy is Protect for what it covers, representment for what it doesn't — and detecting the split automatically.
What Shopify Protect actually is
Shopify Protect is Shopify's built-in fraud coverage for eligible Shop Pay orders. When a covered order gets a fraud chargeback, Shopify absorbs the loss — the merchant is reimbursed for the disputed amount and doesn't need to submit any evidence. Protect is included free for eligible Shopify Payments merchants.
The critical word is "eligible." Protect's coverage rules are narrow, and understanding them is the whole game.
What's covered
Shopify Protect covers a chargeback when all of these are true:
- Order paid via Shop Pay (not just Shopify Payments generally — specifically the Shop Pay wallet)
- Merchant is in the US
- Order is for physical goods (not digital, not services)
- Shipped with valid tracking within Shopify's fulfillment windows
- Chargeback reason is fraud or "transaction not recognized" (typically Visa 10.4, MC 4837, MC 4863)
For eligible orders, Protect handles everything automatically — you don't submit evidence, you don't track a deadline. Shopify reads the dispute, applies coverage, and reimburses you. The chargeback still counts toward your chargeback rate (Protect doesn't change that — it only changes who bears the financial loss).
The gap Protect leaves
Every dispute that doesn't hit all five conditions above is notcovered by Protect. The uncovered categories, ranked by Aurai's book prevalence:
| Category | % of volume | Protect coverage | Right path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-fraud disputes (13.1, 13.2, 13.3, 13.5, 13.6) | ~55–65% | None | Representment |
| Non-Shop-Pay Shopify Payments fraud | ~10–15% | None | Representment |
| Digital-goods disputes | ~5–10% | None | Representment (access proof) |
| International orders | ~5–10% | None | Representment |
| Eligible Shop Pay fraud | ~15–25% | Full | Protect handles |
Non-fraud disputes alone are the majority of most Shopify merchants' chargeback volume. If your only defense is Protect, you're losing every 13.1, 13.2, 13.3 dispute by default. Those are also the disputes where representment has the highest win rates — Visa 13.1 with delivery proof wins 60–80%, or 85%+ with CE 3.0.
The split strategy
The right strategy for a Shopify merchant is split coverage: Protect handles what it covers, representment handles the rest. The key is detecting the split automatically so you don't (a) submit evidence on cases Protect will resolve, or (b) let cases Protect doesn't cover time out.
Detect Protect coverage
Read the protectStatus field on the Shopify dispute object. If Protect is applied, skip all representment work — Shopify handles it.
Route uncovered disputes
For everything Protect doesn't cover, treat it as a normal representment case. Detect the reason code, assemble the reason-code-specific evidence, submit before Shopify's admin deadline (7–21 days).
Handle Protect-eligible-but-declined edge cases
Occasionally Protect declines a case that seems eligible (missed tracking window, ambiguous fulfillment). Fall back to representment — Protect declines aren't final, they're just a decision not to bear the loss.
Economics
Concrete numbers for a Shopify merchant with 25 monthly chargebacks at $120 AOV:
- ~5 disputes covered by Shopify Protect ($600 in reimbursed disputed amount, handled by Shopify)
- ~14 disputes are non-fraud disputes — 13.1 / 13.2 / 13.3. With representment and 75% win rate, ~11 wins × $120 = $1,320 recovered
- ~4 disputes are non-Shop-Pay fraud. With representment and CE 3.0 where qualifying, ~3 wins × $120 = $360 recovered
- ~2 disputes are digital or international. Harder to win, ~1 recovered × $120 = $120
Total representment recovery: ~$1,800/mo. Aurai's 25% success fee: ~$450/mo. Net keep: ~$1,350/mo. That's ~$16,200/year that Protect alone wouldn't have recovered.
Frequently asked questions
What does Shopify Protect cover?
Eligible Shop Pay orders — US, physical goods, tracked shipping, fraud/"transaction not recognized" reason codes.
What doesn't Shopify Protect cover?
Digital goods, international, non-Shop-Pay orders, and every non-fraud reason code. ~60–70% of a typical merchant's dispute volume.
Should I fight disputes Protect already handles?
No — Protect handles the outcome automatically. Fighting in parallel wastes evidence work.
Can Aurai coordinate Protect and representment?
Yes. Aurai reads the Protect coverage flag and skips covered cases; for everything else it assembles reason-code-specific evidence and submits.
