Partial-receipt disputes require per-item evidence: which items went in which box, each box's tracking, each box's delivery status. Order-level 'delivered' proves nothing when boxes travel separately — some codes (Amex C08) explicitly handle 'partially received' claims. Prevention is split-aware communication: tell the customer they're getting two boxes before box one arrives half-empty and alarming.
Why splits create disputes
Multi-location fulfillment splits routinely: item A ships from warehouse 1 today, item B from warehouse 2 on Thursday. The customer ordered once and expects one arrival.
Box one arrives with half the order and no explanation → the customer concludes items are missing → support ticket if you're lucky, full-amount dispute if you're not. And the full-amount dispute is the trap: proving delivery of half an order doesn't defend the whole charge.
Split-aware communication
- At fulfillment: 'Your order ships in 2 packages' email, listing which items in which, each with tracking. Shopify's multi-fulfillment emails handle this if enabled and unedited into vagueness.
- Each package's contents on its label/slip — 'Box 1 of 2: [items]' converts a half-empty delivery from alarming to expected.
- On any long gap between boxes (backorder splits): proactive status on the trailing item with a cancel-remainder option. A part-cancelled order beats a whole-disputed one.
Per-item evidence
The partial-receipt rebuttal maps items to boxes to deliveries: fulfillment records per package, tracking per package, delivery confirmation per package. "All items delivered: box 1 (items A,B) delivered [date], box 2 (item C) delivered [date], tracking attached for both" — complete and checkable.
If a box genuinely went missing, refund that box's items proactively — a partial refund documented pre-dispute defends the remainder. Aurai reads Shopify's multi-fulfillment structure natively, so split-shipment rebuttals map items to tracking automatically.
Frequently asked questions
Can a customer dispute a whole order when one box arrived?
They can and do. Your defense needs per-box delivery proof — and where only part delivered, a proactive partial refund for the missing part defends the rest.
Do split shipments increase dispute risk?
Uncommunicated ones do. With shipment-contents emails and per-box tracking, splits are dispute-neutral.
