Shopify Protect eligibility — why most of your orders don't qualify

Shopify Protect is real, free, and useful — and it covers a much smaller slice of your dispute exposure than the marketing suggests.

Protect requires five conditions simultaneously: Shop Pay checkout, US merchant, physical goods, valid tracking, on-time fulfillment. Miss any one and the order is unprotected. Since Shop Pay is typically 30–40% of checkouts and fraud codes are only ~30% of disputes, Protect ends up covering roughly 15–25% of a typical store's chargeback exposure. The other 75–85% needs representment.

The eligibility checklist

An order is Protect-covered only when ALL are true:

  1. Paid via Shop Pay (the wallet — not just Shopify Payments)
  2. Merchant is in the US
  3. Physical goods (no digital, no services)
  4. Shipped with valid tracking from a supported carrier
  5. Fulfilled within Shopify's timing windows
  6. Dispute reason is fraud or 'unrecognized' — not non-receipt, not quality, not subscription

The status shows per-order in the admin. If you've never checked, the covered share is probably lower than you assume.

Where the exposure actually is

Uncovered by design:

  • All non-Shop-Pay orders — usually 60–70% of volume
  • All non-fraud disputesnot received, not as described, subscription canceled — together 60–70% of dispute volume
  • Digital products, international merchants, late or untracked fulfillment

Multiply it out and Protect covers ~15–25% of dispute exposure. Good! But not a strategy on its own.

Filling the gaps

The complete stack: Protect handles its slice automatically; representment fights everything else. Aurai reads the Protect status per dispute, skips covered cases (no duplicate work), and fights the rest with reason-code-specific evidence — at 25% of wins only. It installs in two minutes from the Shopify App Store. Full breakdown in Shopify Protect vs representment.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify Protect cover 'item not received' disputes?

No. Protect covers fraud and 'unrecognized' codes only. Non-receipt, quality, and subscription disputes are always yours to fight.

Is Shopify Protect free?

Yes — included for eligible US Shopify Payments merchants. There's no reason not to enable it; just don't mistake it for full coverage.
