Chargeback alerts for Shopify — Ethoca and Verifi

An alert arrives hours after the cardholder calls their bank — and days before the chargeback posts. That window is the cheapest exit in dispute management.

Alerts intercept disputes at the issuer: you refund within 24–72 hours and the chargeback never files — no $15 fee, no rate impact, no fight. Enrollment runs through alert providers or apps that bundle network access (Verifi CDRN/RDR for Visa, Ethoca for Mastercard). The economics hinge on rules: auto-refund low-value alerts, review high-value ones where representment EV beats the refund. Full break-even math in the economics deep-dive.

How alerts work

When a cardholder disputes, participating issuers route a pre-notification through Verifi (Visa) or Ethoca (Mastercard) before the chargeback formalizes. You get ~24–72 hours to refund; if you do, the case closes — the chargeback never posts, never counts toward your rate, never costs the $15.

RDR (Rapid Dispute Resolution) goes further: rules-based auto-refunds at the issuer level, no manual touch. Coverage isn't universal — participating issuers cover a meaningful share of US card volume, less internationally — so alerts complement representment, never replace it.

Enrolling as a Shopify merchant

Shopify doesn't bundle alert access natively. Paths:

  1. Via an app that includes them — dispute apps bundle alert network access with per-alert pricing.
  2. Direct provider enrollment — worthwhile at higher volume; involves descriptor registration so alerts route to you.

Either way, registration keys on your statement descriptors — every descriptor variant must be enrolled or its disputes bypass the alert network. Descriptor hygiene and alert coverage are the same project.

The refund rules that make alerts pay

Alerts cost $15–40 each, so blanket auto-refunding everything overpays on orders you'd win. Sane rule set:

  • Auto-refund alerts under ~$75 (fee + fight cost exceeds recovery)
  • Auto-refund anything matching known fraud patterns (already-flagged orders)
  • Review high-value alerts with strong evidence — eating one chargeback to win $400 back beats refunding $400
  • Freeze fulfillment instantly on any alert for an unshipped order — that's pure loss prevention

Aurai applies exactly this triage automatically — alerts route into the same decision engine as disputes, with your thresholds.

Frequently asked questions

Do alert refunds count against my chargeback rate?

No — that's the point. The dispute closes before becoming a chargeback, so it never enters the network count.

Do alerts cover every dispute?

No — only disputes from issuers participating in Verifi/Ethoca networks. Meaningful US coverage, thinner internationally. Alerts reduce the flow; representment handles the rest.
